Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
The graph below tracks the usage of the word “gratitude” in our society since the year 1800 and it’s surprising to see how little it appears today in our vocabulary. I’m not certain what conclusions can be drawn but regardless of what we may be feeling or doing, we aren’t talking much about gratitude.
Stewardship is at heart all about gratitude. It’s not just being thankful; it’s also taking action. This year, as we think, talk and pray about stewardship let’s make a practice of using the word “gratitude.” And let use our thankfulness to propel us into actions that reflect God’s generosity.
